What is Natural Breast Augmentation?
Natural breast augmentation is a surgical technique that uses your own fat cells to enhance or enlarge your breasts. It has become increasingly popular over the last five years because of the long lasting and natural results without the use of breast implants. Dr. Capek calls it the ultimate ‘green’ procedure because it “reuses/recycles/reduces” unwanted fat from problem areas, such as your lower abdomen, thighs, or muffin top, to enhance your breasts naturally.
What are the benefits?
This precise, sculpting procedure is performed to reshape your breasts or to make them naturally larger. It can benefit women with small breasts who want a modest augmentation, as well as patients who have uneven breasts or contour deficiencies after breast biopsy and want a natural alternative to implants. This is also a great choice for women who no longer want their breast implants after augmentation, but want to maintain volume and shape with a natural look. This fat transfer technique can also enhance the results of breast augmentation with implants by adding contour to the cleavage or upper breasts to make them look softer and more natural.
Who is a good candidate?
Natural breast augmentation may be an excellent choice for you if you have enough fat in other parts of your body to ‘harvest’ for transfer, and:
- You are looking for a modest increase in breast size – no more than one bra-cup size and want natural-looking breasts.
- You have some ‘deflation’ after pregnancies or weight loss, or some specific areas in your breasts that need ‘filling’, but you are otherwise happy with your breast size.
- You already have breast implants but want them removed and the volume replaced with your own tissue.
- You already have breast implants but the edges are noticeable and unnatural-looking because of a lack of fat in your upper body.
How is the procedure done?
Natural breast contouring begins with the harvest of your own fat from stubborn ‘donor’ sites using a gentler form of liposuction. Since the procedure requires living tissue to be successful, I use low vacuum pressure and gentle instrumentation that does as little damage to the cells as possible.
The concentrated, healthy fat cells are placed into syringes and I use a blunt-tipped cannula to carefully inject the fat in a three-dimensional sculpting technique to contour your breasts. This meticulous injection technique ensures that a large percentage of the fat cells survive and receive blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients naturally from the body while being minimally traumatized in the process.
What is the down time?
Your breasts and donor sites will be a bit swollen and bruised after the procedure. There is usually minimal discomfort in the breast area and the recovery in the donor sites is similar to liposuction. Bruises generally take up to 3 weeks to completely disappear and compression garments on the lipo-harvest areas are helpful. I recommend that patients avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks post-surgery, and you should avoid any pressure on the breasts or high impact exercise for 6 weeks. The results are noticeable right away and will stabilize within 3-6 months.
What are the risks and results?
Complications from Natural Breast Augmentation are rare but all surgical procedures carry some risk. Benign changes on your mammogram, such as small oil cysts, scar tissue, or calcifications may occur and are not serious. Some of the fat cells will not survive the transfer process and will be naturally be absorbed within the first few weeks. If your volume enhancement does not meet your expectations, a second fat transfer session may be an option. Donor sites may not be perfectly smooth and touch-ups may be required.
Realistic expectations are key; this procedure does not give the same appearance as a breast implant augmentation. For women who are good candidates, this procedure is safe and the results are excellent, with a look and feel that is very natural.
