PRP Skin Rejuvenation
New Services at Capek Plastic Surgery!
You may have heard of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as another natural treatment to combat aging. It made headlines when celebrities like Kim Kardashian were having so-called “Vampire Facials”.
What is it exactly?
PRP is a component of your own blood containing powerful platelet cells and growth factors that show great promise in the area of regenerative medicine – the study of rebuilding human tissue. It can be used as an anti-aging treatment for your skin, stimulating new collagen production, reducing wrinkles and scars, and the visible signs of aging by growing new, healthy tissue.
Collagen and volume is what gives skin a firm, youthful appearance. As we age, our skin cells produce less collagen, contributing to sagging, wrinkles and soft tissue depressions in the skin. Sometimes the skin is damaged in other ways, like acne scarring or sun exposure. PRP therapy counteracts aging and other skin damage by stimulating new collagen production exactly where we want the skin to repair and rejuvenate itself.
How is it done?
We draw blood from your arm and then spin the vials in a centrifuge, which separates the plasma from the red blood cells. We spin the plasma a second time to concentrate the cells called platelets, and their associated growth factors, into PRP. This ‘liquid gold’ is then either applied directly on the skin with a micro-needling treatment, or injected under the skin into scars, wrinkles or crepe areas like under the eyes. We’ll determine the best option for you at your consultation. PRP is most often used on the face, neck, décolletage, and hands to improve and rejuvenate skin and/or minimize the appearance of scars.
How does it work?
The platelet cells and growth factors in PRP are known to enhance the normal healing process. Scientific research suggests that PRP stimulates the growth of multi-potent stem cells and collagen-producing cells, as well as new microscopic blood vessels. This new tissue stimulation includes collagen growth for firmness and elasticity, added volume for smoothness, and more blood flow for oxygen delivery to the skin.
How many treatments are needed and how long does it last?
The number of treatments needed and the type of treatment varies for each patient. PRP applied with micro-needling is usually done is a series of 3 or 6 treatments at 4 week intervals, depending on the condition we are treating. For example, if you are looking for better skin texture and rejuvenation, then 3 treatments initially may be enough. If you have deeper wrinkles or acne scars, then we will recommend a 6-treatment package. In addition, we may suggest injecting deeper wrinkles or scars directly with PRP. We will repeat the injections at 4 week intervals until the desired result is achieved. For most patients, maintenance with 1-2 treatments per year is beneficial.
With PRP injections in particular, some results may be visible immediately at the time of treatment. Then there is usually a return to baseline in 3-5 days as the PRP is absorbed back into the body prior to the complete action of the cellular regenerative process. With both topical and injected PRP, most patients see ongoing improvement for up to 12 weeks after the last treatment, with results lasting up to 2 years. Individual results vary.
Is it safe?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is considered to be a safe, natural treatment because it uses cells and growth factors from your own blood, which cannot be rejected. PRP is being used in many areas of medicine, including Orthopedic injuries, to help the body heal itself with good success and few side effects. Minor issues, such as bruising and swelling may occur. More serious side effects are rare and will be further reviewed at your consultation.
