Bellafill® is the first injectable collagen filler that smooths smile lines and is FDA approved for correction of moderate-to-severe facial acne scars. Bellafill is unique because it’s the only collagen treatment with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres, FDA approved to add volume and stimulate your body’s natural collagen production for younger-looking and smoother skin. Patients throughout the Capital District areas of Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Saratoga trust New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lucie Capek to perform their Bellafill. Many of our patients also travel from New York City, Vermont, Massachusetts and beyond to receive her skilled and compassionate care.

The injectable gel is made up of 80% collagen and 20% PMMA microspheres. The collagen is gradually absorbed and is replaced with your own collagen. The PMMA microspheres stay in the injected area and continue to stimulate the collagen production for years. Bellafill can be used in several ways:

  • Smooth facial wrinkles – Bellafill can smooth facial wrinkles by adding volume under the skin, particularly in the nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines. Bellafill provides beautiful, natural results that can last up to 5 years.
  • Treat acne scars – Bellafill is the only dermal filler approved by the FDA for this indication. Acne scars occur when severe acne inflammation causes irregular healing and reduction of collagen, which is essential for skin structure and fullness. Dr. Capek improves the appearance of acne scars by adding volume below them, to lift the indented area for a leveler, smoother complexion. Bellafill only corrects rolling acne scars, or rounded shaped scars, so a consultation with Dr. Capek is important to make sure your scars can be improved with injections.
  • Add volume to the cheeks or jawline – Bellafill can be used ‘off label’ to fill other areas of the face that need volumizing, such as the midface or pre-jowl hollows. Specialists like Dr. Capek often use a variety of fillers in this capacity and she will determine which one is best for you.

Is Bellafill® right for me?

Bellafill may be right for you if you want to correct wrinkles or acne scars with a long-lasting filler.  Most patients who get Bellafill for wrinkle or volume correction have used shorter-acting fillers before and are comfortable with the results of filler treatments. For acne scars, this is an excellent first-time alternative.  As always, a personalized consultation with Dr. Capek is the best way to determine a treatment plan that is right for you.

How is the treatment done?

Before your first Bellafill treatment, you will need a skin test on your forearm to make sure you are not allergic to the collagen portion. You can then have your treatment 4 weeks after a negative skin test. Numbing cream is applied to the area to be filled and Dr. Capek injects the Bellafill to smooth and contour your skin. You apply an ice gel pack on and off for the rest of the day. A second treatment to ‘top-up’ the correction is usually performed 3 months later for a correction that may last for up to 5 years. Individual results vary.

What are the risks?

Temporary side effects may include swelling, redness, bruising, pain, itching and discoloration of the injection site. Generally, these side effects are not serious and resolve within a week. More severe side effects are uncommon but can include late granulomas or nodules in rare cases. Dr. Capek will inform you about all the risks and complications before your treatment session.
