If you’ve been having good results with dermal fillers, but wished the volume lasted longer between touch-up injections, or you’re starting to have concerns about loose skin or volume loss, including in areas such as your decollete, Sculptra might be an option to consider.

What is Sculptra?

Initially approved by the FDA in 2004, Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator that is used to add volume to the face, achieving a more youthful and healthier appearance. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, the product does not physically fill in facial volume and wrinkles, but rather it harnesses the power of your own body to produce collagen, stimulating growth of your own tissue to add fullness and firmness to your face, and can be used off-label in areas such as your decollete to improve skin quality as well.

Sculptra is a powder form of poly-L-lactic acid, the same molecule that makes up commonly-used, dissolvable sutures that have been used in millions of procedures worldwide. It is reconstituted with sterile water or saline and then injected into the subcutaneous tissues of facial areas such as the temples, brows, cheeks, and jawline, or the deep skin layers of the decollete, where it creates a kind of scaffold that signals your body to increase collagen production.

What to Expect from Sculptra Injections

During your Sculptra treatment, your provider will begin by applying a numbing cream to your face. Dr. Capek, or one of her trained injectors, marks out the areas that need volume and sculpting, and the Sculptra solution, with added local anesthetic for comfort, is precisely injected. The treatment is typically completed in about 20 minutes.

Discomfort and downtime after Sculptra treatments are minimal. You may have a day or two of mild swelling, and less often bruising, around the injection site(s). Bruises can be covered by make-up 24 hours after injection. Note that the immediate volume you see on the day of treatment is just the water or saline solution, and this will disappear in the first day or two. Improvement with Sculptra occurs gradually over the next several months as your collagen is replenished.

At least 2-3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart are required for most people to obtain an optimal improvement that is then expected to last at least 2 years if you follow a healthy lifestyle.

Results of Sculptra Aesthetic

Because the benefits are largely produced by your own skin tissue, Sculptra has the potential to be a long-lasting correction – some patients cite more than 2 years of enjoying a more youthful appearance. As always, individual results vary by patient and it patients who are older, it may not be effective due to poor collagen. Habits such as smoking will make Sculptra treatments ineffective because collagen growth will not occur.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sculptra

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra injections?

Anyone over the age of 18 who has started to notice a loss of facial volume or wants to add volume, or smooth fine lines and wrinkles is a great candidate for this treatment.

How long will my results last?

Results may vary but can last at least two years but usually longer.

How does Sculptra work?

This injectable contains the ingredient poly-L-lactic acid, which acts as a collagen stimulator. Collagen is a protein in the skin that keeps it firm and full; when collagen growth is stimulated, the face will regain a full, youthful appearance.

How much does Sculptra cost?

The cost of this treatment varies, depending on how much injectable is used and the number of visits required. Most patients need at least 2 visits, and often more, to see meaningful results. They will spend somewhere between $1,500-$4,500 for a treatment series.

Can Sculptra be used as a lip filler?

Sculptra is not recommended for lip augmentation because it is likely to cause nodules in this area.

Can I exercise after a Sculptra injection?

You should wait about 24 hours to exercise after your Sculptra treatment to minimize bruising and swelling.

Will my results look natural?

Because your body is creating your own collagen in response to Sculptra, natural-looking results are one of the main benefits of this treatment.

How can I reduce swelling around my injection site?

Applying ice packs on and off for the first 2 days is helpful to reduce swelling and bruising.

How quickly will I see results?

Results will develop very gradually over about 3 months and are rarely significant after just one treatment. In most cases, a second treatment is recommended 5-6 weeks after the first but your provider will recommend the best treatment series for your particular concerns.

Does Sculptra have any side effects?

After your injection, you may have some swelling, redness, bruising and itching around the injection site, but this will quickly go away within a few days. Sculptra may also cause nodules to form, that are more likely to be felt than seen. These are temporary in most cases. To help reduce the risk of nodules forming, massage of the treated areas is recommended for 5 mins, 5 times per day for the first 5 days after treatment.
