The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to as “Botox”, is the number one non-surgical procedure in the USA. This injection treatment temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet near the eyes, softens muscle bands in the neck, plumps lips, slims the face and more!

Small doses of neurotoxins block nerve impulses, temporarily and subtly weaken the muscles of facial expression that cause wrinkles giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Botox can also be used for problems such as excessive sweating or grinding your teeth at night. Our providers can advise you regarding which treatment options we offer and customize a treatment plan just for you! Try this wrinkle-reducing treatment people have been enjoying for decades with Botox injections under the supervision of our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lucie Capek.

What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are prescription medicines made from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause certain muscles to contract. When carefully injected into targeted areas, these treatments soften the activity of the associated muscles, helping smooth forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and other facial lines for a refreshed, more youthful appearance.

In addition to their cosmetic uses, neurotoxins have a long history in medicine and are approved to treat conditions such as:

  • Cervical dystonia (neck muscle spasms)
  • Chronic migraine
  • Overactive bladder
  • Upper limb and lower limb spasticity (including pediatric patients)
  • Excessive sweating

They may also be used in cases of movement disorders, urinary incontinence, or other medical conditions where relaxing muscle activity provides relief.

Why We Use Botox

At Capek Plastic Surgery, we choose BOTOX® Cosmetic because it is the most trusted and widely studied neuromodulator available today. Botox has over two decades of proven safety and effectiveness in softening expression lines and creating natural-looking results.

How Botox Works

Botox contains a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles. By reducing the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles, Botox helps smooth the skin for a refreshed, youthful appearance.

Onset and Duration

Most patients begin to see improvement within a few days of treatment, with full results appearing around 10–14 days. The effects typically last 3 to 4 months, depending on your individual metabolism, muscle activity, and treatment area.

FDA-Approved and Clinically Proven

Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes. It’s also used safely and effectively for other aesthetic and medical purposes, including other areas of the face, teeth grinding and excessive sweating.

Our Commitment to Safety and Results

Every Botox treatment at Capek Plastic Surgery is performed under the supervision of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Lucie Capek. We customize every treatment to your desired outcome while ensuring the highest level of safety and care.

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?

Botox treatments are recommended and helpful for healthy patients ages 18 and up, for concerns such as facial wrinkles, neck bands, thin lips, tooth grinding, excess sweating and more. Younger patients also benefit from early treatment to help prevent wrinkles and slow down the signs of aging.

That being said, Botox and other botulinum toxin products are not right for everyone, and certain patients should avoid treatment for safety reasons. You should not receive Botox Cosmetic if you have a skin infection at the planned injection site, a known allergy to botulinum toxin type A or any of its components, or if you have experienced allergic reactions to another botulinum toxin product in the past. Patients with neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) are at higher risk for severe problems like muscle weakness, breathing problems, or difficulty swallowing. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients, those with uncontrolled bleeding problems, or individuals who have recently taken certain prescription medicine, muscle relaxants, sleep medicine, cold medicine, or over-the-counter medicines should also avoid treatment.

However, there are still many possible benefits of Botox in the right patients. For your safety, it’s important to tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, all the medicines you are taking, and any history of swallowing problems, urinary incontinence, or nervous system disorders before receiving injections. Feel free to call us to learn more about the treatments that help you look better and feel more confident with a simple Botox injection.

How to Prepare for a Botox Treatment

Preparing properly for your Botox treatment can help minimize side effects and ensure you get the best possible results. One of the most important steps is avoiding certain medications and supplements that can thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising at the injection site. These include Aspirin, fish oil, turmeric, supplements containing Vitamin E, Ibuprofen, other NSAIDs, and prescription or over-the-counter blood thinners.

In addition to adjusting medications, we recommend avoiding alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as it can also increase bruising and swelling. If you are prone to cold sores and will be receiving injections around the mouth, let your provider know in advance; preventive prescription medicine may be recommended.

It’s also a good idea to arrive at your appointment with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, or sunscreen, to reduce the risk of infection at the planned injection site. Be sure to tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you are taking so they can evaluate your personal risk factors.

What to Expect During Your Botox Treatment

Botox injections are typically performed with a tiny needle and we use a vibration device to help distract from the discomfort of the injection. Patients say it feels like a pinch or a sting but a typical treatment lasts only a minute or two. There is minimal downtime, and you can return to your daily routine shortly after your appointment. We recommend avoiding a strenuous workout for the rest of the day.

What Does Recovery Look Like After Botox

After receiving Botox injections, recovery is usually quick and simple. You may notice small “Botox bumps” at the planned injection site, which flatten within an hour. Some patients experience mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection site, but these side effects are generally short-lived.

Results can appear as early as the next day, though with certain botulinum toxin products like Botox Cosmetic, it may take up to 14 days for the full effect to develop. It’s important not to judge the final result too soon; give your forehead lines, crow’s feet, or frown lines enough time to smooth out as the associated muscles relax.

How Do I Maintain the Results of Cosmetic Neurotoxin Injections?

Botox is a temporary treatment, and how long your results last depends on the botulinum toxin product used, the dosage, and your body’s natural metabolism. On average Botox lasts about 3-4 months.

If you receive a low dose, such as with a Lip Flip, results may fade more quickly. To maintain smoother skin and continue reducing the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other upper facial lines, most patients schedule regular maintenance appointments.
