Am I a Good Candidate?
If you suffer from any of the following concerns, breast implant surgery with implants may be right for you:
- Underdeveloped natural breast tissue
- Disproportionately small breasts compared to your lower body
- Asymmetrical or oddly-shaped breasts
- Deflation and lost volume due to weight loss or after pregnancy and breast feeding
- Loss of firmness, loose skin and sagging breasts (often paired with a breast lift)
Types of Breast Implants
The recommended choice of implant type, size, and shape will be determined based on your unique breast shape, tissue characteristics, body type, and your desired results. During your consultation, Dr. Capek will discuss your options and help guide you through this important decision-making process.
All FDA-approved breast implants have a solid silicone rubber shell that is either filled with saline solution (sterile salt water) or elastic silicone gel (more closely mimics the feel of tissue). Both saline implants and silicone breast implants have been regularly researched and tested for safety precautions and carry warranties from the manufacturer.
Before Your Procedure
Before your surgery, a consultation with Dr. Capek is necessary to explain and choose your various procedure options. Dr. Capek uses breast implant sizers to help you visualize your desired breast size and how it will look on your body type. She wants you to be an informed participant in the planning of your procedure so that you are ultimately comfortable and satisfied with your results. Knowing what to expect and being prepared every step of the way will ensure a positive outcome.
As always, you want to be in optimum health when considering elective surgery. Follow a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise, don’t smoke since this decreases your body’s ability to heal normally, and follow your primary care physician’s advice when treating chronic conditions like high blood pressure.

LEARN MOREYour Procedure
The breast augmentation procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure in our QuadA-accredited office-based operating suite, Capek Surgical Arts, or a hospital operating room.
During the procedure, Dr. Capek makes a small incision either under the breast or around the areola to place the implant. Recent studies suggest that the inframammary fold incision (under the breast) has a lower risk of associated complications like capsular contracture and therefore, this is the most commonly recommended approach.
Dr. Capek creates the pocket for your implants using an instrument called the Harmonic Scalpel, which helps to minimize bleeding and muscle twitching during the surgery. She will insert and position your implants in either a sub-muscular (below the pectoralis muscle) or sub-glandular position, depending on your particular shape, natural anatomy, and lifestyle.
Dr. Capek does not typically use drains in first-time breast augmentation patients and she closes your breast augmentation incisions with dissolvable sutures and glue. The entire surgery generally takes 1-2 hours to complete.

After Your Procedure
You can look forward to a better-proportioned figure, filling out your clothing better, as well as improved self-confidence in many situations in your life.
Following your surgery, you can shower within 48 hours and wear a sports bra around the clock for the first 2-3 weeks. Dr. Capek rarely uses drains for breast enhancement. Plan to rest quietly for 24 to 48 hours. Patients with sedentary jobs may return to work within a week. Strenuous or high-impact activities like running may be restricted for 6-8 weeks.
It is important to follow Dr. Capek’s aftercare instructions to avoid any complications. Breast augmentation recovery times vary from patient to patient depending on your health and the extent of your procedure. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to oversee your recovery process.
Over the long term, you should continue with your regular mammograms and breast exams with your PCP. If you have silicone implants, periodic Ultrasounds are recommended to screen for silent implant rupture.
What Are the Risks?
Even with the care of professionally trained surgeons like Dr. Capek, every surgical procedure carries some risk. Although uncommon, early risks of breast augmentation procedures include bleeding or hematoma, anesthesia side effect like nausea, changes in the sensation of the nipple or breast. However, with Dr. Capek’s care before and after your surgery, these risks and complications are infrequent and treatable.
Over the long term, breast implants may have associated issues that require monitoring and treatment. Most commonly these include capsular contracture (increasing firmness and possible shape change of the breast) due to abnormal scar tissue forming around the implant. This is the number one reason for a second surgery within the first 10 years after implantation. Other risks include implant malposition (shifting of the implant into an undesirable position, like dropping too low), and implant rupture.
If saline breast implants break, the implants release a saltwater solution that is naturally absorbed and expelled from the body. Because a silicone implant rupture may be silent (have no associated symptoms) the FDA recommends that women with silicone implants should have periodic Ultrasounds to check their integrity.
These complications are not completely predictable or avoidable and therefore, having a breast augmentation with implants is a lifelong commitment. Even years later, you may require a second or third surgery to address associated problems. Nevertheless, most patients love the results of their breast augmentation surgery!
