The Traditional Approach of a Surgical Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. It involves making incisions mostly inside the nose with a possible connection across the columella (the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils) to access the bone and cartilage of the nose for reshaping.
To reshape the nose, we alter the tissues under the skin that give the nose structure, namely the nasal bones and cartilage. This is a 3-dimensional procedure where millimeters make a big difference! The most common goals include making the overall nose smaller, reducing a dorsal hump, refining the nasal tip, narrowing the nostrils, or correcting a crooked nose.
Recovery from surgical rhinoplasty includes swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes with about 2 weeks of social downtime. Patients usually wear a nasal splint for a week to protect the nose as it heals, followed by taping to help keep swelling down. Final results and resolution of all swelling may take a year or more, but changes are obvious early on. Surgical rhinoplasty results are permanent.
The Non-Surgical Alternative of a Liquid Rhinoplasty
Liquid rhinoplasty, also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty or filler rhinoplasty, involves injecting dermal fillers (usually hyaluronic acid filler) into specific areas of the nose to alter its shape. It is a highly specialized and advanced injection procedure and should only be performed by an expert injector.
This method can effectively smooth out dorsal humps, lift the tip, and enhance symmetry without the need for incisions. However, it cannot reduce the size of the nose or make permanent structural changes.
Recovery is minimal compared to surgical rhinoplasty, with little to no downtime. Some patients may experience minor swelling or bruising at the injection sites, but this usually resolves within a few days.
The results of liquid rhinoplasty are temporary, lasting anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used and the patient’s metabolism. Repeat treatments are necessary to maintain the desired appearance.
Choosing Between the Two
The choice between surgical and liquid rhinoplasty depends on several factors. Your specific reasons may vary, and your physician will be able to determine which treatment is best for you depending on your aesthetic goals.
If you seek permanent changes or need significant reshaping (e.g., reducing size or altering nasal structure), surgical rhinoplasty is likely the better option.
Liquid rhinoplasty offers a quicker recovery with minimal downtime, making it suitable for those with busy schedules. However, not everyone is a candidate and this alternative may not meet your expectations if you are looking for major changes. Non-surgical procedures can be more cost-effective initially but do require ongoing maintenance treatments.
