Dr. Lucie Capek was the first plastic surgeon in the Albany-Troy-Saratoga-Schenectady area to offer the new Precision TX™ treatment for excessive sweating, otherwise known as hyperhidrosis. Utilizing new technology, the Precision TX treatment was one of the first treatment options developed for excessive sweating that provides lasting results.

Patients throughout the Capital District trust New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lucie Capek to treat their hyperhidrosis wherever they’re having concerns. Many of our patients also travel from New York City, Vermont, Massachusetts, and beyond to receive her skilled and compassionate care.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where a patient experiences sweating beyond a normal level and in inappropriate situations. For example, patients with hyperhidrosis may experience sweating appropriate for intense exercise while doing normal activities. It can affect areas like the underarms, hands, or feet. Excessive sweating can lead to many side effects like skin irritation and being self-conscious in everyday situations.

There are generally two types of hyperhidrosis: primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Primary hyperhidrosis is believed to be caused by the nervous system and nerve signals in the sweat glands and hair follicles of the affected area. A “faulty” nervous system can cause the body to produce more sweat than necessary. Where the nervous system normally switches the sweat glands “on” and “off” to produce sweat, primary hyperhidrosis means that the sweat glands remain in the “on” position.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Secondary hyperhidrosis is usually the product of an underlying medical condition or as a result of taking certain medications. Some common causes of secondary hyperhidrosis include diabetes, thyroid problems, or menopause (notorious for producing night sweats or hot flashes).

Precision TX for Excessive Sweating

Severe, excessive sweating is estimated to affect more than 4 million people in the United States. Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and distracting in everyday situations, often affecting people’s lifestyles and emotional well-being.

In the past, hyperhidrosis treatment options varied from topical medications, botulinum toxin injections (Botox), or oral medications that were notorious for their risk of side effects. Most people with hyperhidrosis simply learn to live with sweating or use additional pads to absorb sweat where they sweat excessively.

Precision TX is different. It utilizes a unique and focused delivery of laser energy to target and ablate the sweat glands within the treatment area, most commonly for excessive underarm sweating or axillary hyperhidrosis. This revolutionary, minimally invasive surgical procedure is the newest application for the Sidelaze800 side-firing laser by Cynosure, the makers of SmartLipo and Cellulaze. The design of the laser allows for energy and heat to be directed upward toward the undersurface of the skin, directly at the sweat glands (and hair follicles).

Good Candidates for Precision TX

Everyone has a sweating response to exercise, hot weather, or stress, but for those who relate to some of the following behaviors, it’s clearly more than just a natural occurrence:

  • Bringing a change of clothes or other supplies with you constantly to help you manage the condition
  • Changing clothes frequently throughout the day
  • Using prescription powders or deodorants
  • Thinking about your condition and how to manage it for many hours a day

If these hyperhidrosis symptoms describe you in any way, you can likely benefit from Precision TX’s long-term sweat reduction used to treat excessive sweating.

Nearly everyone in generally good health can undergo this condition, although Dr. Capek will still take a full medical history and physical exam before performing the procedure. She will discuss any underlying medical conditions, possible side effects, overall health, and what you can expect from your minimal downtime.

The Precision TX Procedure

Precision TX takes under one hour. It’s performed under local anesthesia and is easily tolerated, with minimal discomfort and downtime. After cleaning and sanitizing the treatment area, Dr. Capek will insert a tiny cannula with a laser fiber at the tip into the skin’s surface, directly targeting the sweat glands responsible for excessive sweating. By heating these sweat glands to a certain temperature with the laser, they are destroyed and no longer have the capacity to produce sweat. 2 treatments may be required for optimsl results, especially in male patients.

Precision TX for Excessive Sweating Results

Most patient notice immediate reduction in sweating but final results stabilize after about six months. Most patient report more than 80% sweat reduction after a single Precision TX treatment. Some patient may need a second treatment, however, to achieve optimal reduction. After treatment, most patients can control sweating in the treated area through a standard over-the-counter antiperspirant.

For hyperhidrosis patients, Precision TX can be a valuable investment versus treating excessive sweating with prescriptions or learning to live with it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Precision Tx

How does Precision TX target and disable sweat glands?

Precision TX uses a small laser fiber inserted beneath the skin to deliver controlled, targeted heat directly to overactive sweat glands. This heat damages the glands enough to stop them from producing sweat while leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. Because the treatment works at the source, it provides longer-lasting improvement than surface-level treatments.

What kind of downtime should I expect after a Precision TX treatment?

Most patients experience minimal downtime and are able to return to normal activities within a day or two. Some swelling, tenderness, or bruising in the underarm area is common but usually resolves quickly. Overall, the recovery process is straightforward and much easier than traditional surgical approaches.

How soon will I notice reduced sweating?

Many patients begin to notice a reduction in sweating within just a few days, with improvements continuing over the following weeks. As the treated sweat glands are gradually disabled, the underarms start to feel drier and more comfortable even during stress or physical activity. Full results typically stabilize within one to three months.

Will Precision TX work if prescription antiperspirants or Botox don’t?

Yes, Precision TX is a strong option for patients who have not achieved meaningful relief from topical treatments or injectables. Because it directly targets the sweat glands, it can provide more significant and longer-lasting improvement. Many patients who have struggled with temporary results from Botox find Precision TX to be a more permanent solution.

Is one treatment enough for significant sweat reduction?

For most patients, a single Precision TX session is all that is needed to achieve noticeable, long-term sweat reduction. The laser energy is powerful enough to treat a large percentage of the overactive glands during one visit. Your provider will discuss what to expect based on your specific level of sweating.
