What is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) with Pellets?

Bio-IdenticalHormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) with pellets is a medical treatment used to restore hormonal balance in the body. This therapy is often prescribed to women who experience hormone decline or imbalance due to aging such as peri-menopause and menopause, medical conditions, or surgical procedures. Pellet therapy involves the insertion of tiny hormone-containing pellets under the skin to deliver a consistent and steady dose of hormones over an extended period. At Lucie Capek MD Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we use bio-identical hormones, which are hormones that are made from plants and chemically closely mimic the hormones your body naturally produces before menopause. Pellets provide consistent hormone levels without the fluctuations seen in menstrual cycles, or from replacement therapy using hormone creams and pills. Common bio-identical hormones used in pellet therapy include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Who Can Benefit from Pellet Hormone Therapy?

BHRT with pellets may benefit women who have symptoms of hormone decline or imbalance related to age or other factors, causing problems that range from wellness issues to serious medical conditions. As hormone levels decline around menopause, women may also feel less like ‘themselves’, which has a negative impact on their quality of life. They may not have the strength or energy they once had, sex may be difficult or uncomfortable, they may gain or lose weight and become more sensitive to heat and cold. All kinds of things can change!

What Does the BHRT Pellet Therapy Process Look Like?

Your specific treatment process may vary, but in general it will follow the steps below.

Consultation

One of our experienced providers will perform a thorough evaluation of your overall health and hormonal health specifically, and discuss your symptoms. They will determine if BHRT pellet therapy is appropriate for you and discuss next steps, including a blood draw, to evaluate your hormone levels.

Labs and Customized Treatment Plan

The dosage of hormones delivered via pellets is tailored to each individual’s unique hormonal needs. Hormone levels are assessed through blood tests and symptoms to determine the appropriate hormone balance. Your blood draw will be done comfortably right in our office by one of our providers or nurses. The blood samples are sent to LabCorp for evaluation.

Pellet Insertion

During a simple in-office procedure, tiny hormone pellets are placed just beneath the skin, typically in the upper buttock area. Local anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort.

Steady Hormone Release

Over time, the pellets gradually release hormones into the bloodstream. The release is continuous, mimicking the body’s natural hormone production and avoiding big fluctuations. Steady hormone levels relieve symptoms more consistently over time.

Monitoring

Your provider will monitor your hormone levels and adjust the therapy as needed to maintain optimal hormone balance. Pellets typically need to be replaced every 3-4 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of BHRT Pellets compared to other forms of hormone replacement?

BHRT pellets offer the advantage of providing a steady and consistent release of hormones over time, reducing the risk of hormone fluctuations. Additionally, they can be customized to match individual hormone needs more precisely, potentially resulting in fewer side effects. They are also an incredibly convenient treatment option as they do not require daily application of a cream or taking a pill.

How long do BHRT pellets last in the body?

BHRT pellets typically last between 3 to 4 months in the body, gradually releasing hormones over this period. The frequency of replacement usually matches this interval, but may vary slightly depending on individual hormone levels and treatment goals.

What symptoms can BHRT pellets help alleviate?

BHRT pellets can help alleviate symptoms associated with menopausal and peri- menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, low libido, weight gain and cognitive issues.

What are other health benefits of BHRT?

Recent studies show that BHRT pellets have added health benefits , including bone health and muscle mass maintenance, protecting you from heart disease and even decreasing the risk of breast cancer.

How soon can patients expect to notice results after starting BHRT pellet therapy?

Patients may start noticing improvements in symptoms within a few weeks to a couple of months after starting BHRT pellet therapy, although individual results can vary. Some individuals may experience relief sooner, while others may require more time for the hormones to reach optimal levels in the body. The dosing of your pellets is adjusted as needed over the first few months of treatment.
