The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to as “Botox”, is the number one non-surgical procedure in the USA. This injection treatment temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet near the eyes, softens muscle bands in the neck, plumps lips, slims the face and more!

Small doses of the TOX block nerve impulses, temporarily and subtly weaken the muscles of facial expression that cause wrinkles giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Botox can also be used for problems such as excessive sweating or grinding your teeth at night. Our providers can advise you regarding which treatment options we offer and customize a treatment plan just for you! Try this wrinkle-reducing treatment people have been enjoying for decades with Botox injections under the supervision of our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lucie Capek.

What are the different types of “Botox?”

There are 4 brands of “Botox” that are FDA-approved for various cosmetic treatments and include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, and the newest arrival, Daxxify. All use Botulinum Toxin Type A as their active ingredient, responsible for the temporarily weakening of the treated muscles.

Each type differs slightly due to one, or more, of the following factors: formulation, onset and duration, dosage, and FDA-approved uses.

Formulation

Most “Botox” brands require an inactive stabilizer for the toxin.

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic uses human serum albumin (HSA), a blood product, as its stabilizer.
  • Dysport® uses HSA as a stabilizer and cow’s milk protein as a protectant.
  • Xeomin is a “naked” toxin, meaning it lacks stabilizer proteins. Some claim this may reduce the risk of antibody formation over time
  • DAXXIFY™ is unique because it is the only toxin formulation that uses a novel peptide as a stabilizer and does not contain any human or animal byproducts.

Onset and Duration

The onset of results can vary slightly between these products. Botox Cosmetic may take longer to start working than Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify. On average, results last for about 3-4 months for Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin, while clinical studies of the newest toxin, Daxxify, showed results in frown lines lasting up to 6-9 months

Dosage and Units

Every TOX brand has a different proprietary formulation and each manufacturer defines their units differently. In our practice, we simplify the differences for you by converting the units of any brand we use to what we refer to as Botox Equivalent Units. This also simplifies the pricing structure and makes it easier for you to compare the cost of similar treatments.

FDA Approval

All of the brands listed have FDA approval for treating wrinkles in at least one area of the face. However, medical providers may use this medication “off-label” in other areas that are appropriate for treatment. As noted above, the active ingredient in all of these TOX brands is Botulinum Type A.

Our practice uses primarily Botox Cosmetic, and we now offer Daxxify as well!

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?

Botox treatments are recommended and helpful for healthy patients ages 18 and up, for concerns such as facial wrinkles, neck bands, thin lips, tooth grinding, excess sweating and more. Younger patients also benefit from early treatment to help prevent wrinkles and slow down the signs of aging.

Pregnant patients and those with certain types of neuromuscular conditions or compromised immunity may not be candidates. Botox Cosmetic is not recommended if a patient has an infection in the injection site(s) and/or has a known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin formula or to any of the components in the formulation. Do not undergo Botox treatment if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have experienced an allergic reaction to another product containing botulinum toxin. Our providers are medical professionals who review your detailed health history to ensure this treatment is appropriate for you.

There are many possible benefits of Botox in the right patients. Feel free to call us to learn more about the treatments that help you look better and feel more confident with a simple Botox injection.

How Should I Prepare for my TOX Treatment?

We recommend avoiding certain medications before your treatment to minimize the risk of bruising. These include, but are not limited to: Aspirin, fish oil, Turmeric, supplements containing Vitamin E, Ibuprofen or other NSAIDS, and other blood thinners. We can still treat you if you can’t come off these meds but you are more likely to bruise.

What Can I Expect with TOX Treatment? Does it Hurt?

Botox injections are typically performed with a tiny needle and we use a vibration device to help distract from the discomfort of the injection. Patients say it feels like a pinch or a sting but a typical treatment lasts only a minute or two. There is minimal downtime, and you can return to your daily routine shortly after your appointment. We recommend avoiding a strenuous workout for the rest of the day.

“Botox bumps” are common and are little raised areas on the skin from the small amount of fluid injected. They disappear in about an hour. There is a possibility that the area around the injection site will swell, turn red, and cause tenderness from the injection itself; however, these side effects are typically very minor and go away after a few hours or days.

How Often Will I Need to Get Botox?

This depends on which product we use and how you metabolize it. In the average patient receiving the recommended dosing with Botox Cosmetic, Dysport or Xeomin, Botox treatment results last 3-4 months. Daxxify may last over 6 months based on clinical studies. Dosing also affects duration; if you are receiving a lower-than-recommended dose, or a treatment that inherently uses a low dose such as a Lip Flip, your results may not last as long as these averages.

Will I See Results Quickly?

You may see results as early as the next day after treatment depending on the product used. In many patients and with certain brands such as Botox, results may take up to 10 days to fully develop so be patient and don’t judge the final result until then!
